What a longer car loan costs

Understand the trade-off between monthly payment relief and the extra interest on a longer auto loan.

A lower bill is not a lower price

Extending the term spreads principal across more payments. That lowers the monthly bill, but the unpaid balance stays outstanding for longer. With a positive fixed rate and the same principal, total interest increases.

Compare a fixed amount and rate first

Use the 60 vs. 72 vs. 84 month calculator to isolate term length. Then compare actual lender quotes because APR may change with the term. A lower advertised payment may also assume a larger down payment or exclude taxes and fees.

Think about the point when you will sell

A longer term pays down the balance more slowly. If you sell or trade before payoff, the remaining debt must be settled regardless of the car’s market value. Depreciation is uncertain, so do not treat an estimated future sale price as guaranteed.

Keep the rest of the budget visible

Insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs still matter even when the loan payment fits. Use the affordability calculator to reserve money for those costs before working backward to a vehicle price.
